The Center's Community Engagement Committee sponsors projects in which sangha members can provide services and assistance in the Birmingham community.

For our July Community Engagement project, join us at Bib & Tucker, a community-based sew-op that helps artisans use their sewing skills to earn money, teaches sewing, and participates in community activities. For the last few years, they have involved community groups in creating quilts with social-justice themes, known as the March Quilts. This year the theme is Alabama’s Unsung Heroines.

With our quilt squares, our group will be honoring Claudette Colvin, an American nurse and a pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, she was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery. Ms. Colvin's act of resistance occurred months before Rosa Parks caught national attention for the same act.

We will meet at the sew-op (4915B 5th Avenue South, Birmingham, Al 35222) on July 20th at 10 a.m. to make squares for this year’s quilts. No sewing skills are necessary, and materials are provided. Just bring your creativity and plan to have fun contributing to this worthwhile cause.

Everyone is welcome!  The registration fee of $5 covers our cost of the program and materials and may be paid when you register or at the door in cash.
